UPDATE: The November workshop is sold out — but don’t worry! Planning to host another one in early 2026, so keep an eye on social media and/or sign up for my email newsletter on substack to hear about it first!

***

A Poetics of Birth is a virtual writing workshop exploring the birth stories we carry from various poetic angles. This generative workshop will include (optional) story sharing, somatic exercises, generative writing prompts, and the opportunity to share new work with light feedback / workshopping from the cohort. We will seek to generate numerous first drafts of poems or short prose over the course of the workshop.

This writing workshop is open to parents and birth workers, and will focus on lived experiences of labor and birth. It does not matter how recent your birth was — parents and birth workers at any age or stage are welcome. You do not have to be an experienced writer to participate. All are welcome if you are willing to dive in! The only prerequisite is a lived experience of birth either as a parent, a partner or support person, or a birth worker.

This is a VIRTUAL writing workshop via Google Meet on Saturday, November 22nd from 1-4 pm EST. You can pay what you can, anything from $10-$50. If you would like to join on scholarship, please reach out to me at amybornman.com. There are 10 seats available for this workshop — attendance is capped to ensure that sharing will be possible.

About the facilitator: Amy Bornman is a poet, doula, textile artist, and parent living in Pittsburgh, PA. She is the author of two books of poetry, Broken Waters (Fernwood Press, 2024), and There is a Future (Paraclete Press Poetry, 2020), and co-author of How to Sew Clothes (Abrams Books, 2023). She also publishes short-run pamphlets via her small press, Imaginary Lake, and designs sewing patterns. Amy’s work focuses on themes of domesticity, caregiving, confession, and spirituality. You can find more about Amy at amybornman.com, and more about Amy’s birth work at amybornman.com/doula.

A note on birth trauma: This workshop is welcoming to all experiences of birth, and recognizes that birth carries trauma for many people. Difficult stories are welcome, and will be treated with the utmost care and respect. You are welcome to come as you are, with the stories that you carry. You are not required to share your story or work at any point in this workshop, and you are welcome to step away at any time.
